Fitting a JVC KD-SH1000 CD/SD/USB Head Unit 11th February 2007: The car still had it's original stereo fitted, a double DIN CD/Tape/Radio system with built in equaliser and DSP, as part of the 8 speaker Toyota Premium Sound System. I will be replacing the speakers, amplifiers and wiring at a later date. I decided to replace the head unit with a JVC KD-SH1000 as the unit is not too flashy (still more flashy than I would like) and supports CD/MP3/SD & USB. It will take a 1GB SD card behind the facia (good for 200 high bitrate MP3's), plus a 4GB USB Pendrive on the front panel (ideal for long journeys).
I removed the trim and old stereo, removed the mounting brackets and bolted them to the JVC unit, along with a new under radio storage bin (Toyota P/N: 55521-16030 @ £18.45 list price). There were two plugs on my wiring loom, one that is needed for the new head unit, one that is not. I have created a pdf document showing the pin-outs and function / colours of the two connectors **HERE**. I had purchased a wiring adaptor kit (InCarTec PX741 - Active System with RCA Plugs), but on fitting, I found that the 'Amp +' wire was not connected, and also one of the Ground wires was in the wrong hole in the adaptor! I joined the 'Amp+' wire to the 'Antenna+' wire which fixed both the amps and the electric aerial. At this point the stereo worked, with sound, but was VERY noisy (due to the missing ground wire). For the incorrect placement of the 'A13' ground pin, I used a pair of snips and cut out a small slot above pin 'A13' which allowed me to pull out the pin. I then just pushed it into the correct position 'A11'. The system now works perfectly! There is no noise, the sound quality is excellent now I've set up the time alignment and equaliser settings, and I've turned off the flashy demo graphics :)
